ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

FAQS

How Do I Get Started?
Any interested prospective owners can email the Wagging Tail's founder, Lisa Bernhard at: lisa@waggingtailfoundation.org.

All that is required is a brief note explaining why you are interested in becoming a dog owner, and contact information (address and phone number). Prospective owners must also provide a brief statement verifying that they need Wagging Tail Foundation assistance.

What Happens Next?
Wagging Tail will call to arrange an in-person interview if you live in the area, or a telephone interview if you are located elsewhere. This is an informal way for Wagging Tail to learn about you and your lifestyle, so it can make the right choice of dog for you. The requested age, size, energy level, and temperament requirements of the dog are all critical in making a successful match.

How Long Will it Take to Learn If I'm Eligible for Assistance?
You'll be notified within a week of the interview about the status of your request for Wagging Tail services. The decision of who is awarded a dog first will be based on factors such as the ease of locating the selected breed, the amount of outside help, guidance, and regular support the applicant requires.

How Long Will it Be Before My Dog Arrives?
This will depend upon the availability of the desired breed and the age of the requested dog. If the breed will not be available for a significant length of time, Wagging Tail will recommend another dog for you. If you request a puppy, be prepared to wait at least eight weeks after the litter is born.

Where Will Wagging Tail Foundation Obtain Dogs?
Wagging Tail intends on using well-researched breeders as its primary source. Adoptions from rescues and humane societies will only be supported after extensive temperament testing has been done to substantiate the mental fitness of the dog in question.

What if There Are Problems Following the Adoption of My Dog?
Should the dog demonstrate behavioral problems after adoption, the dog owner must contact Wagging Tail Foundation. If necessary, the Wagging Tail will consult with a behaviorist. While many behavioral issues are minor and easily solved, if a professional determines that a dog is unsafe and unable to be rehabilitated, Wagging Tail will return the dog to its original breeder or shelter. Please note that it will be the responsibility of the owner to assume any costs associated with harm caused by the dog; the Foundation will not be legally, or otherwise, held responsible for the dog's actions. The owner will be asked to sign a contract to this effect prior to finalizing the adoption of their dog.

If I Already Own a Dog, How Do I Get Assistance?
One-time payment for emergency medical care, operations, or on-going support may be available for those who already own a dog that they did not receive from the Foundation. Wagging Tail will speak in depth with you to determine the amount of support that is required (for example, funds to pay for an operation, or medical procedure, or treatment for a chronic illness such as chemotherapy for a dog with cancer, that is beyond the means of the owner, or regular support on an continual basis). If possible, Wagging Tail will attempt to locate a veterinarian who will provide treatment at a reduced rate. If this is not feasible, and Wagging Tail has sufficient funds to pay for the services, it will do so. Wagging Tail may also provide an ongoing stipend in cases where one is warranted.
